The government has required all the Airline Companies to guarantee that at least 60% of tickets on any flight are free. This is a huge relief for travellers. This is in response to numerous travellers pointing out hidden expenses like seat selection fees and accusing airlines of taking advantage of their patrons.
The Union Ministry of Civil Aviation introduced a number of passenger-focused regulations, including the crackdown on seat fees. Nowadays, the cost of a seat on an aeroplane is determined by its position. Seats with more legroom and those with windows and aisles are most expensive. On a plane, very few seats, mostly in the middle row and near the back, are free with additional fees.
Customers frequently criticise operators and question on social media why they must pay more for seat selection. “Hopefully, this issue would be resolved by the ministry’s rap, they say.”
60% Seats mandated to be free to select
The Ministry of Civil Aviation has taken a major step by ordering airline carriers to guarantee that atleast 60% of seats on any aircraft are allocated at no cost. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation issued the directive with the intention of increasing air travel’s accessibility and transparency.

After purchasing a ticket or during online check-in, a number of airlines have begun charging extra for choosing a preferred seat. In order to provide “fair access” for travellers, the new strategy aims to address these exploitations.
Important directives from the center to the Airlines
Every flight must allot atleast 60% of the seats at no extra cost.
It is recommended that passengers on the same PNR be seated together, ideally in adjacent seats.
Clear and open guidelines regarding the transportation of pets, musical instruments, and sporting goods.
Strict adherence to the framework for passenger rights, especially when there are delays, cancellations, or refusals to board.
Passenger rights are prominently displayed on airline websites, mobile applications, booking platforms, and airport counters.
To provide greater accessibility and awareness, passenger entitlements should be clearly communicated in regional languages.
According to the ministry, the actions are intended to “further strengthen passenger convenience, transparency, and uniformity” among Airlines.
