Nijjar Case Row: Mark Carney & PM Modi Discussion?

Journalists questioned Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on whether he and Indian counterpart Narendra Modi discussed the very contentious Nijjar case during the G7 meeting. “We discussed the importance of having the law enforcement dialogue, not just dialogue, cooperation directly, the importance of addressing transnational repression”. Carney told reporters at the G7 Leaders’ Summit in Kananaskis, Alberta.

He went on to say, “I need to be careful about further commentary because there is a judicial process that is underway.”

The decision was made “with a view to returning to regular services to citizens and businesses in both countries”. According to the Canadian prime minister’s office. The two leaders decided that India and Canada would designate new high commissioners, as ambassadors are known between Commonwealth nations.

What was the matter with Hardeep Singh Nijjar?

India retaliated sharply against Carney’s predecessor, Justin Trudeau. He publicly accused India of complicity in the killing of a Sikh separatist, Nijjar, on Canadian soil last year and expelled the Indian ambassador. In 2023, Nijjar, who supported Khalistan, an independent Sikh state, was shot dead outside a gurdwara in British Columbia.

With a $9 billion commerce in 2023 and close cultural ties thanks to Canada’s sizable Indian diaspora. The controversy had seriously strained diplomatic ties between the two countries. With the exception of the embassy in New Delhi, Canada was compelled to cease in-person services at all of its diplomatic posts in India.

New Delhi declared its intention to restore relations with Canada on the basis of “mutual trust and sensitivity” following Trudeau’s departure. India and Canada’s security authorities have been in communication again in recent months. Both countries are considering the prospect of selecting new high commissioners.

The external affairs ministry last week described Canada and India as “vibrant democracies”. Also stated that New Delhi thinks the two nations’ prime ministers’ meeting on the fringes of the G7 Summit will provide a crucial chance to share opinions. It will also “explore pathways” to rebuild bilateral relations.

India-Canada ties are “extremely important,” according to PM Modi

Nijjar Case Row: Mark Carney & PM Modi Discussion

On his first trip to Canada in ten years, Prime Minister Modi stated that India-Canada relations are “extremely important”. The two countries should cooperate to achieve win-win collaboration in a number of areas. “I am confident that under your leadership, we will be able to work together in a positive way and take the India-Canada relationship forward”. Modi said, congratulating Carney on his “grand victory” in the election.

“We both support democratic principles. If the two countries cooperate and make the best use of all of their resources, “We can work for the welfare of the entire humanity,” Modi stated. “Together, we can strengthen democratic values, we can strengthen humanity.” Modi is in Canada at Carney’s invitation to attend the G7 Summit. He declared, “I am very confident that we’ll be able to do this task.”
