Lufthansa flight to Hyderabad took U-turn mid-air amid bomb threat

Following a bomb threat, a Lufthansa flight headed for Hyderabad was forced to execute a U-turn and return to Frankfurt Airport in Germany after failing to get the landing permission. Early Monday was the planned arrival time at Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Airport for flight LH752, which had departed from Frankfurt. But in the middle of the flight, the plane turned around. Lufthansa Airlines was quoted by news agency ANI as stating, “The aircraft made a U-turn and returned because we did not receive a permit to land in Hyderabad.”

A senior Hyderabad airport officer who verified the plane’s return was also cited by the agency. He said the bomb threat was sent when the aircraft was still outside Indian airspace. Consequently, the flight returned to its original location rather than entering Indian territory.

Questions were raised by the aircraft’s sudden detour. The airline blamed it on a lack of landing permission, while airport officials said the bomb threat was to blame. No other information regarding the passengers on the plane or the nature of the threat was promptly made public.

Overnight accommodations are provided to the Lufthansa flight passengers.

According to reports, the detour was announced to the passengers on board without providing a clear explanation. “We were informed about two hours after takeoff that we would be returning to Frankfurt.” A woman who was flying from the United States to see her mother in Hyderabad told PTI from Frankfurt. “Lufthansa offered us lodging at the airport for the night and informed us that we would be leaving again on the same flight on Monday at 10 a.m.”

The passengers were not made aware of a bomb threat. Airline and security personnel usually do not disclose such information right away in order to prevent panic among passengers. After the aircraft has undergone a thorough security examination and received the necessary approvals, the rescheduled flight is anticipated to take off from Frankfurt.

Activation of the mid-air bomb threat protocol

Any mid-air threat, especially a bomb scare, sets off a stringent series of international aviation rules, according to aviation security experts. Notifying air traffic control, securing the cockpit, alerting the pilot, and looking for emergency landing or diversion possibilities are some of these. When the aircraft is still closer to the departure airport, it is customary to return to the point of origin. It was done in this instance, too.

Around 5:30 p.m. local time on Sunday, the Lufthansa flight made a safe return to Frankfurt. Reports according to the tracking website FlightAware. After that, the aircraft was relocated to a safe bay for a thorough examination.

What caused the mid-air return of Lufthansa flight LH752 to Hyderabad?

Lufthansa flight to Hyderabad took U-turn mid-air amid bomb threat

On June 15, a bomb threat “forced” the Lufthansa aeroplane to do a U-turn and head back to Frankfurt airport. “We did not receive a permit to land in Hyderabad, which is why the aircraft made a U-turn and returned.” An airline spokeswoman told the reporters. The aeroplane was sent back to Germany since the bomb threat was received while it was still outside Indian airspace. Reports according to a Hyderabad airport official.
