Today, hundreds of protestors demanded statehood and constitutional protections on the streets of Leh. To further their demand for statehood, they have called for a total shutdown today and have been participating in a hunger strike. The irate protestors set Fire to a police car, threw stones at the police, and stormed the BJP office in Leh, Ladakh. In response, the police used Lathi-charging and tear gas shelling to break up the tumultuous masses.
In the first such incident of violence during the ongoing statehood campaign. Angry demonstrators and police clashed this morning in Leh, Ladakh. They have been throwing stones at authorities and even setting a police car on fire.
Such violence has never been seen in Ladakh before in recent memory. The impending negotiations with the administration provided the backdrop against which the violence occurred. To continue discussing the aspirations of the Ladakh people, the centre, however, has scheduled a meeting with representatives from Ladakh for October 6th.
Youth-led protests sparked by Wangchuk’s Fast in Ladakh
Notably, Sonam Wangchuk has been fasting for a long time. He has been fasting, demanding that Ladakh be granted full statehood and added to the Constitution’s sixth schedule. His appeal has received a lot of support, particularly from young people who blamed the centre for not doing more to address the problem. The situation in Leh became increasingly unstable as students began chanting and escalating their protest as police attempted to quell the unrest.
BJP office set on fire
During the rally, the protestors clashed with the police and set Fire to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) office. After Article 370 was abolished, Jammu and Kashmir was, however, split into 2 sections on 5th August 2019. Leh and Kargil were merged to become the union territory of Ladakh. Jammu and Kashmir became its own union territory. There is currently a call for full state food for this area of Ladakh.
