Less than a month after an outbreak of Ebola was proclaimed in the eastern Congo, authorities reported that at least 100 individuals had died from the disease.
Attempts to curb the spread are nevertheless hampered by violent conflict in hotspots. It was also hindered by scepticism among some locals, and attacks on medical personnel by irate citizens.
According to the most recent situation report released late in June, there have been 101 facilities. There have also been 19 recoveries out of the 550 instances of the sickness documented as of June 7.
More than 90% of the infections are localized in Ituri, a province in eastern Congo. Additionally, cases have been reported in the provinces of North and South Kivu. They have also crossed the border into Uganda.
Imported Uganda reported cases
In addition to one likely fatal case, Uganda has confirmed 19 hospitalized cases and two deaths associated with the outbreak. All infections, according to the authorities, can be linked to visitors coming from the DRC or tho those who had intimate contact with them.
The districts of Kampala and Wakiso have been found to have the majority of instances. In Uganda, health officials have not discovered any proof of ongoing community transmission.
Congolese citizens who come to Uganda up for medical treatment account for over 70% of Confirmed cases. Over 660 contacts are now be monitord as part of continuous contact tracing operations.
No indication of onwards transmission was discovered in a different examination involving a patient who travelled through Uganda to the United Arab Emirates. Global reaction
On June 5th, WHO and the Africa Centre’s for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) unveiled a combined continental preparedness. They also came up with response plan in response to the growing outbreak.
In order to support outbreak planning, detection, and response operations throughout Africa, this strategy will use 518 million from the United States.
