Following months of increasing pressure, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced his resignation on Monday. It initiated a leadership campaign that will produce Britain’s seventh prime minister in ten years. Report according to AFP.
Speaking outside 10 Downing Street, Prime Minister Starmer admitted that Labour Party lawmakers no longer trusted him. He has been in office since July 2024. He declared that he had informed King Charles III of his resignation, enabling the Labour Party to select a new leader who would go on to become the nation’s next prime minister.
“I will continue to serve as prime minister until the election is over. I will make every effort to guarantee a smooth transition of power,” he declared. Since Labour lost badly in the May municipal and regional elections, Starmer’s hold on power had been eroding.
Starmer was under increasing pressure
Reporters had come together outside Downing Street to await clarification on Starmer’s position. His declaration comes after days of intense uncertainty. Earlier, junior minister Jacqui Smith claimed that Starmer had been considering his future “really hard” and supported his choice.
For the current British prime minister, it was a dramatic turn of events for his term. Keir Starmer had guided Labour to a resounding victory in 2024. It came following 14 years of Conservative rule in the UK.
Both parties have lost voters to the far-right Reform UK party, which is on the rise. For almost a year, it has dominated opinion polls. Another setback for Labour came when the left-wing Green Party won the normally secure Manchester seat of Gorton and Denton.
Andy Burnham in the competition

Andy Burnham gained notoriety for urging Starmer to resign. He announced that he will run for prime minister in July. Hours after Starmer gave a heartfelt farewell in Downing Street, Burnham made his declaration.
The former mayor of Greater Manchester praised Prime Minister Keir Starmer in a post on X. “His choice signals the start of a change. It’s critical that this process be carried out responsibly and in an orderly manner. I’ll participate in this process by putting myself forward.” Burnham said, “The nation will receive stability, seriousness, and a continuous focus on the issues that matter most.”
