As Iran’s Pezeshkian travels to New York for the UNGA 2026 session, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio will attend the United Nations General Assembly. It’ll mark Pezeshkian’s first visit to the US ever since the war broke out between the two.
Russia has claimed that its deputy foreign minister Alimov was refused a visa prior to the UN General Assembly in New York. China stated that it’s Vice President will attend the UNGA. Kremlin branded this as a hostile act.
What is on the UNGA 2026 agenda?
The 81st UNGA session holds the theme “Restoring trust, managing transformation: a United Nations that delivered for all”. Key discussions over the week tackled climate change, development, sea-level rise, pandemic preparation, racism and nuclear disarmament.
Beyond the formal agenda, leaders were scheduled to debate the crisis in the middle East and Ukraine. They also talked about artificial intelligence and the UN’s financing challenges. Diplomats will also keenly monitor the battle to succeed Guterres, whore tenure ends on 31st December.
Prior to UNGA, Donald Trump had a busy Itinerary
The wars in Iran and Ukraine were among the main topics of discussion for US President Donald Trump. He was in New York for a full program of talks with foreign leaders. He was one of those who spoke at the General Assembly as well.
Volodomyr Zelenskiy, the president of Ukraine met with Trump at the UN in New York. In order to stop attacks on energy infrastructure, Zelenskiy advocated for an energy truce with Russia.
