Kolkata doctor rape-murder: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee agreed to acquiesce to the demands of the protesting doctors, who were demanding justice for the rape and death of a trainee doctor. This included the removal of a portion of the Kolkata Police and senior brass from the state health department. In addition to the Director of Medical Education (DME) the Director of Health Services (DHS) and the Deputy Commissioner (North Division) who purportedly volunteered to compensate the parents of the deceased physician, the chief minister consented to dismiss CP Vineet Goyal.
At midnight, the Chief Medical Officer declared that the Supreme Court hearing was planned for Tuesday, and that the new police commissioner’s appointment would be made public after 4 pm. On Monday, Banerjee had a meeting at her Kalighat residence with the agitated doctors.

“We have complied with nearly all of the doctors’ requests. We tried our best, keeping in mind the plight of the common people. I immediately appeal to the physicians to return to work,” Banerjee said, further adding that no disciplinary action would be taken against the agitating doctors.
Chief Secretary Manoj Pant formalized and signed the decisions, and the 42 doctors who attended the discussions countersigned them. However, the doctors declared that they would not stop protesting until “words” were translated into “concrete action.”
The signed document also revealed that the government has approved spending Rs 100 crore on hospital infrastructure improvements and the reconstruction of patient welfare committees. A special task group, chaired by the Chief Secretary, has been constituted to tackle safety measures in the hospitals. Additionally, a strong grievance redressal system will be established.
According to Doctors, Protests Won’t Stop
The declaration is regarded as a kind of surrender. When the medics returned, there was a joyful vibe at the protest site. The junior doctors proclaimed their 38-day protest to have resulted in a “big victory” when the authorities agreed to their demands.
They stated that lifting the protest and the casework would only be possible if the government fulfilled its promises. “They have only given us verbal assurance,” a Junior Doctors’ Forum spokeswoman stated.
However, they stated that their other goal, which is to break up the hospital’s corruption network, still stands. One of the other representatives said, “We will also keep up the agitation for the health secretary’s removal.”
What the Government and Mamata Banerjee have Assured
₹ 100 crore has been set aside for Mamata Banerjee to implement the demands for hospital infrastructure upgrades. “We’re not insulting them. They haven’t held the position for very long and haven’t committed any crimes. However, we have accepted as the pupils stated that they do not trust them, Ms. Banerjee stated.
Vineet Goyal, the head of the city police, will stay around for at least the Durga puja, according to what the Chief Minister had previously stated. She had expressed her desire for him to remain, despite his repeated requests to step down.
