The 12 people found guilty in the 2006 Mumbai Train Blast Case were cleared by the Bombay High Court on Monday. Five of the 12 prisoners were on death row. The train bombs resulted in 820 injuries and deaths of 187 people.
The decision was rendered on Monday by a division bench consisting of Justice Anil Kilor and Shyam C. Chandak. “The case against the accused has been completely unproven by the prosecution. The accused’s involvement in the crime is difficult to accept.” 10 Supreme Court declared, “they are conviction is quashed and set aside.”
What took place in the previous judgment and during the attack?
189 people were killed and another 800 injured when 7 explosions shook packed Mumbai local trains during the evening Rush hour on July 11, 2006. In September 2015, a special trial court under the state’s organised crime statute sentenced 7 defendants to life in prison for their participation. And 5 defendants sentenced to the death penalty for placing the explosives.
The trial court cleared another defendant, but only after he was imprisoned for 9 years. In addition to the accused’s appeal, this ruling was then sent to the supreme court for confirmation of the death punishment. A special benjo was established in July 2024 to arbitrate the case. This had been pending in the High Court since 2015. In the meantime, one of the defendants died in jail in 2021 as a result of COVID-19.

Naveed Hussain Khan, Asif Khan, Ehtesham Qutubuddin Siddiqui, Mohammad Faisal Ataur Rahman Shaikh, and Kamal Ansari (who is already deceased) were on death row as inmates. Muzammil Ataur Rahman Shaikh, Suhail Mehmood Shaikh, Zameer Ahmed Latiur Rehman Shaikh, Shaikh Mohammed Ali Alam Shaikh, Mohammed Majid Mohammed Shafi, Mohammed Sajid Margub Ansari, and Tanveer Ahmed Mohammed Ibrahim Ansari had all been given life sentences.
