Cough Syrups Linked to Child Deaths; Owner Arrested

The Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) has issued an order to all States and Union Territories, urging strict adherence to the Drugs Rules, 1945. Order for the testing of pharmaceutical formulations and raw materials, following the sudden deaths of 20 children in Madhya Pradesh. The deaths were associated with Coldrif Cough Syrups.

In an October 7 letter, Dr. Rajeev Singh Raghuvanshi, the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI), stressed the “critical importance of testing new materials, including the excipients, before their use in the manufacturing of pharmaceutical compositions.”

“There have been recent reports of child deaths in Chhindwara, Madhya Pradesh. Allegedly linked to contaminated cough syrups and concerns related to the quality of these cough syrups,” the DCGI directives indeed said in response to the cough syrup deaths in Madhya Pradesh.

Inadequate supervision and regulation of Cough Syrups

Amid growing indignation over the infant deaths, India’s top drug regulator has indeed admitted significant flaws in pharmaceutical manufacturing standards. Authorities saw that manufacturers were failing to test each batch to verify that the final products and production processes adhered to the established safety criteria.

After taking Coldrif Cough Syrup, it was discovered to contain 48.6% diethylene glycol (DEC). It is an extremely dangerous industrial ingredient. All of the impacted children reportedly experienced kidney failure.

In a ray of hope, Pratik Pawar, a one-year-old boy, made a full recovery from encephalopathy and kidney failure and went home on Wednesday. He was being treated at a Nagpur hospital. Unlike those who had ingested the poisonous Coldrif, Pratik had been given a different type of cough syrup.

Arrest of the owner of a Tamil Nadu pharmaceutical business

Officials announced the arrest on Thursday. The proprietor of Sresan Pharma, the Tamil Nadu-based business that manufactured the tainted Coldrif syrup, however, been taken into custody. Late on Wednesday Evening, Ranganathan was arrested by Madhya Pradesh police in Chennai. In other places, a complaint has already been filed against the Business in relation to the fatalities.
