Justice Surya Kant Takes Oath as the 53rd CJI

VeerOn Monday, Justice Surya Kant was sworn in as the 53rd Chief Justice of India (CJI) at the Rashtrapati Bhavan. Justice BR Gavai, who formally resigned on November 23rd, was followed by Justice Kant, 63. Justice Surya Kant, who is from Haryana, has a lot of firsts. He is the first CJI from Haryana and will hold the position for slightly over 14 months. His term will end on February 9, 2027.

Who is Justice Surya Kant?

Justice Surya Kant was born in Petwar Village in the Narnaud region of Hisar on February 10, 1962. He attended local village schools before graduating from Maharshi Dayanand University in Rohtak with a law degree in 1984. In the same year, he also started practicing law at the Punjab and Haryana High court. In Haryana HC he focused on civil, constitutional, and service law. He earned a first-class master’s degree in law from Kurukshetra University thirty years later, while he was a judge.

He rose quickly in the legal field. In 2000, at the age of 38, he was appointed Haryana’s youngest advocate general. The following year, he was promoted to senior advocate. In 2004, he was appointed a judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court. Before being promoted to the Supreme Court in May 2019, he assumed leadership of the Himachal Pradesh High Court in October 2018.

Justice Kant has indeed written over 300 rulings in his six years on the highest court. His ruilings includes a number of well-known constitutional cases. He served on the constitution bench that affirmed Article 370’s abrogation and the bench that rendered the decision regarding Section 6A of the Citizenship Act. Justice Kant was a part of the bench that upheld the validity of Arvind Kejriwal’s arrest while granting him temporary bail. He most recently served on the bench that issued its decision in the Presidential reference regarding the deadlines for the president and governors to sign state legislation.

He started the veer Parivar Sahayata Yojana 2025 as executive chairman of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) to give soldiers, veterans, and their families free legal aid.
