India proclaimed itself a Sovereign, Democratic and republic State on January 26, 1950, despite having gained independence on August 15, 1947. On that day, Dr Rajendra Prasad unfurled the Indian National Flag, and a salute of 21 guns marked the historic beginning of the Indian Republic. Following that, January 26th was declared a national holiday and acknowledged as India’s Republic Day. The constitution cleared the path for democracy by granting Indian citizens the ability to select their own government. India’s first President, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, took the oath of office.
“150 years of Vande Mataram” is the theme for Republic Day in 2026. Written by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay in 1876, this theme represents a significant turning point for India’s national song. It commemorates Vande Mataram as a cultural force that influenced India’s freedom fight and sense of national identity in addition to being a patriotic composition.
Republic Day Parade 2026
Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the nation in putting a wreath in remembrance of the fallen warriors during his visit to the National War Memorial. The Prime Minister and other dignitaries then proceeded to observe the parade from the saluting dais at Kartavya Path.

The President’s Bodyguard, the highest-ranking regiment in the Indian Army, accompanied President Droupadi Murmu, the President of the European Council, and the President of the European Commission. They all arrived in the “Traditional Buggy.”
The National Anthem and a 21-gun salute using 105 mm Light Field Guns were performed after unfurling of the National Flag. Everything according to tradition.
After the President received the salute, the Republic Day parade, however, continued. Approximately 2500 cultural artists from every state and union territory indeed participated this year. The parade was attended by about 10,000 special visitors from all backgrounds.
