A US submarine sank an Iranian warship in the Indian Ocean, killing at least 87 people. A few weeks prior, the Warship, IRIS Dena, had taken part in a naval drill in India. The Moudge-class frigate IRIS Dena also visited India in 2024 to take part in the multinational naval exercise MILAN. From this year’s particular occasion, it was returning when it was attacked by a US submarine.
Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth confirmed the submarine strike and hailed it as proof of America’s global reach in its attack on Iran. However, the US has not confirmed the number of fatalities. “An Iranian warship that believed it was safe in international waters was sunk by an American submarine. Instead, a torpedo sank it,” Hegseth informed reporters.

It was sunk in a US submarine attack on the southern coastal town of Galle. When it was attacked, IRIS Dena was situated some 40 nautical miles off the coast of Galle.
