West Bengal Elections First Phase Complete; Over 91% Voter Turnout

According to the Election Commission of India, 91.58% of voters cast their votes in the first phase of the West Bengal elections on Thursday until 5 p.m. Yesterday, 152 of the 294 assembly constituencies cast their votes. Bengal’s first wave of voting began at 7 in the morning.

While speaking at a rally in Nadia, PM Modi launched jabs at the TMC, intensifying the West Bengal election war. He claimed that Bengalis are upset with the TMC this time around. This time, the Mamata Banerjee-led party might not be able to register accounts in several cities.

What can a high voter turnout indicate?

The turnout is a result of both increased political activity and the statistical impact of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR). SIR removed over 91 lakh names from the state’s voter list, an analyst told PTI.

According to the report’s analysis, the steady increase from 18.76% in the first two hours to 41.11% by 11 a.m. and 62.18% by 1:00 p.m. emphasized a robust voter response across regions. It’s been stable from the politically unstable jungalmahal to the tea gardens of North Bengal and the communally sensitive belts of Murshidabad.

What was the result in 2021?

Though opinion polls generally predicted a competitive contest against the BJP, the incumbent TMC won by a landslide. The Trinamool Congress, in the 2021 West Bengal legislative assembly elections, garnered almost 200 seats.

Which seats are important to keep an eye on?

  • Bhabanipur: Mamta Banerjee will face BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari.
  • Kharagpur Sadar: BJP’s Dilip Ghosh will face TMC’s Pradeep Sarkar.
  • Murshidabad: BJP’s Gouri Shankar Ghosh and TMC’s Shaoni Singha Roy will square off once more.
  • Baharampur: Congress’s Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury is making a comeback.

West Bengal and SIR: How many voter names were deleted?

In the SIR process, around 63 lakh identities that had previously been deleted were joint within additional 27 lakh voters who had been ruled ineligible following a court ruling. In addition to deletions, the Election Commission declared last week that 7 lakh new voters have been added to West Bengal electoral records in advance of the first voting round.

Approximately 3.22 lakh of these new voters will cast their votes in the first phase. The rest, approximately 3.88 lakh, will do so in the second phase.
