Raghav Chadha with 6 other Rajya Sabha MPs Joins BJP

Raghav Chadha, along with 6 other Rajya Sabha MPs, announced to quit the Aam Aadmi Party and merge with the BJP on Friday. Arvind Kejriwal, the leader of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and a former Chief Minister of Delhi, has been severely hurt by the announcement. In the process, Raghav Chadha took a sizeable portion of the AAP Rajya Sabha MPs with him. Kejriwal already demoted Chadha weeks prior.

At a press conference this afternoon, Chadha stated that around two-thirds of the AAP’s ten MPs in the upper house would join the BJP. He accused the party of its pledges to combat corruption in honest politics.

Two-thirds of the AAP Rajya Sabha MPs will join the BJP

Ashok Mittal, a Punjabi MP, was ousted as the Upper House deputy leader by the AAP. Along with Raghav Chadha, Mittal joined the BJP on Friday.

Two-thirds of the Aam Aadmi Party’s Rajya Sabha MPs have left the party and will join the BJP as a faction. This was claimed by Raghav Chaddha at a press conference, accompanied by Pathak and Mittal. According to him, Rajendra Gupta, Vikram Sahni, and party MPs Harbhajan Singh and Swati Maliwal are also leaving the AAP.

7 of the AAP’s ten MPs in the Rajya Sabha switched parties, and the anti-defection law would not disqualify them. The party has ten MPs in the Rajya Sabha. According to Chadha, “more than two-thirds of them are with us in this initiative.” He continued, “They have already signed, and we sent the chairman of the Rajya Sabha all the necessary papers this morning. It includes signed letters and other official documents.”

Why will AAP’s MPs continue to be members of the Rajya Sabha?

Together, seven AAP MPs have decided to resign, guaranteeing their continued participation in the Rajya Sabha. Raghav Chadha claims that more than two-thirds of the AAP MPs in the Rajya Sabha are involved in the decision. It is a need for the MPs to keep their seats in the upper house. “Two-thirds of a party’s MPs may merge with another party in accordance with the constitution,” he said.
