Many were surprised by the outcome of the 2026 Tamil Nadu assembly elections, as actor-turned-politician Vijay is set to become the next chief minister of the state. Since 1967, Vijay has been the first chief minister of Tamil Nadu, and has been from neither DMK nor AIADMK. He made numerous welfare pledges on his way to victory.
In Bengal, Bharatiya Janata Party is set to make their government for the first time. They are currently leading by more than seats. The victory came after beating Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress (TMC), which has held power for 3 terms. Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared victory in West Bengal, saying, “The Lotus blooms in West Bengal”. Shortly after the Election Commission of India started tallying votes for the 2026 assembly elections, the BJP took an early lead but later widened the gap with the TMC.
