Following his incredible 10-wicket haul in the second and final test against Bangladesh in Mackay last week, Australian fast bowler Mitchell Starc overtop India’s Jasprit Bumrah on Wednesday to take the top spot in the ICC Men’s Test Bowling Rankings for the first time in his career.
After finishing with stats of 6/12 in the first innings, Starc was named the Player of the Match in Australia’s innings and 51 run victory. This included a first ball wicket and a five wicket haul in just 22 balls. Then in the second inning he took a 4/39. After taking 12 wickets in the two test matches against Bangladesh, he was also named Player of the Series.
For the first time in his career he took the top spot in the ICC rankings thanks to his performance in Mackay. He surpassed Matt Henry and Bumrah. Starc is leading them by 10 rating points. His highest position to date was number 2 which he initially attained following last year’s Boxing Day Test.
Starc overtakes Bumrah
Prior to this, Mitchell Starc’s career high standing was second. After last year’s boxing day test, he first attained that level.
Bumrah spent two months at the top of the rankings most recently. With a total of 697 days at the top, the fast bowler leads all Indian bowlers and ranks 14th in history. Due to an injury, Bumrah will not play in India’s current test series against Sri Lanka.
