Day 5 Highlights

South Africa’s primary goal was to make Australia more anxious and bat long into the day, even if it always seemed impossible to chase down the world-record fourth-innings total. Since August 2016, when the first test match against New Zealand in Durban was severely impacted by weather, there hasn’t been a drawn test in South Africa.

Australia had been aiming to end the test early on day 5 before the unpredictable afternoon weather. They planned this ever since they declared their second innings at lunch on day 4. Day 4 was the longest. The first three days ended early in the last session because of poor light and heavy clouds were getting thicker.
