Ford produces a large number of pickup trucks annually, especially the F-150 series, yet it is consequently increasing the production of the F-150 Hybrid. Why? If you read today’s issue of The Internet, more precisely the Car Enthusiast’s page, you will learn that EVs are, in fact, dead, and what people want is a hybrid.
Ford moves many pickup trucks but is raising the production of the F-150 Hybrid twice the amount. Why? If you were to flip through the pages of today’s edition of ‘The Internet’ focusing on the Car Enthusiast channel, you would emerge a wiser man with the information that EVs are now a thing of the past and what the world needs are hybrids.
What’s New on the F-150 Hybrid?
This is the new generation of F-150 PowerBoost that entered the market in 2021. Clear lens treatments give the head and running-lamp units an ultra-modern, sort of cyber vibe, while the grille is less shouty and more subtle, and we like it. The powertrain is naturally carried over, but that engine and transmission package is potent.
An electrically powered motor is integrated into Ford’s 3. 5-liter EcoBoost twin-turbo V-6 engine and placed between it and the 10-speed automatic gearbox.
The electric motor provides enough desperation so that total powertrain power is 430 horsepower and 570 pound-feet of torque, a bit more than Lightning’s numbers (580/775) but a bit weaker than that of the standalone 3. 5-liter EcoBoost (400/500).
The Instrumented Numbers
This 2024 model car’s straight-line performance was lower than the PowerBoost Hybrid model we drove in 2021. For instance, as it pertains to the 2024 PowerBoost, it required 5. Moving from 0-60 mph in 4. 7 seconds, the 2020 model outperformed the 2021 version, which takes 5 seconds. 3.
The 2021 Hybrid was a Lariat, not a Platinum, but our newer Truck in the test weighed 18 pounds more. We also tested a 2023 F-150 Tremor model to run 0-60 mph in 5 seconds. 5 seconds. Thus, for a distance of 1,320 feet, the 2024 F-150 PowerBoost requires 14 gallons of fuel. 1 second at 98. 4 mph; 2021 F-150 PowerBoost got’ er done in 13. 8 at 102. 1. That is another significant decline in performance that baffles us.
Things do improve slightly in the braking space; the 2024 model does marginally better than the 2021 by 7 feet, 129 feet to 136. Specs such as the braking distance we complained about three years ago are part of the hybrid.
Should You Get One?
Blanket statement: To sum up, if you purchase a 2024 Ford F-150, you must think about the PowerBoost Hybrid powertrain. That only makes it $1,900 higher than the 3. 5-liter EcoBoost V-6 (XLT or Lariat). As we’ve touched on in several prior reviews of Ford’s best-of-the-line half-ton pickup, we appreciate outlets that let you power a job site, campsite, or your house.
We’re also assuming here that Ford has not quite nailed the 2024 model we tested, as it would have been early builds, and that there was a bit of a speed limp to the timing than we anticipated. A retest is in order, and so is our Truck of the Year competition, which will take place soon. Regarding the Platinum, a base price of over seven and a half thousand immediately places the Truck in the pickup world’s higher stratosphere.
Our favorite overall F-150 is still the Tremor, however. It is plentiful, if not more so, but can rightfully be considered to have astonishing off-road capabilities.
