Eras Tour Brazil: Taylor Swift Grieves Fan’s Pre-Concert Death

At the most recent leg of the Eras Tour in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Taylor Swift is grieving the loss of a fan. Swift posted a handwritten note on her Instagram Story that said. “I can’t believe I’m writing these words but it is with a shattered heart that I say we lost a fan earlier tonight before my show.” The extent of my devastation at this cannot possibly be expressed. I don’t know much about her other than the fact that she was quite young and very gorgeous.

The 23-year-old Ana Clara Benevides passed away from cardiorespiratory arrest after being brought to the Estádio Olímpico Nilton Santos music venue. According to a story in the Brazilian daily newspaper Folha de S. Paulo.  Time For Fun, the company that organized the performance, and Estela Benevides, Benevides’s cousin, both verified her death to Folha. Uncertainty surrounds whether Benevides saw Swift ascend the stage when the event started at about 7:30 p.m. local time.

Folha said that Swift’s Friday performance took place during a heat wave in Brazil, with the temperature “feeling-like” 140°F. According to Folha, firefighters unofficially counted 1,000 fainting attendees at the exhibition. Despite the intense heat, several concertgoers have resorted to social media to complain that the venue did not permit them to bring water bottles inside. Video captured by supporters reveals that Swift interrupted the performance to mention that the audience needed water. She was also seen tossing a water bottle into the crowd at one point.

Swift canceled her performance on Saturday because of the “extreme temperatures.” Rio de Janeiro Mayor Eduardo Paes issued a statement early on Saturday morning that included revisions for the next performance. In order to keep spectators out of the sun, Paes claims that doors would open an hour earlier. More water distribution points would be introduced, and there would be more fire marshals and ambulances. Time For Fun also announced on Instagram that sealed water bottles, mugs, and food may be brought into the arena for the next performances, and that they will give out free water to supporters. “The decision to prevent thousands of people from drinking water in 60-degree Celsius heat is insane and irresponsible.” Wadih Damous, the president of Brazil’s consumer protection agency, told the New York Times that the government will be looking into Time for Fun.

The event promoter has 24 hours to submit evidence to the National Consumer Secretariat outlining the circumstances surrounding the catastrophe. According to a CNN Brasil story that was published on November 18. Information about “who determined the ban on access to water at the show, whether drinking fountains were available, [information] about the technical staff responsible for medical care at the event location. What procedures were adopted to help Ana Clara” is specifically sought after, according to CNN. The decision to initiate legal action against the event producer will be made by the National Consumer Secretariat after receiving a response from Time For Fun.

Swift gave a performance at the same location on Sunday. She’s expected back there on Monday. With its elegiac chorus of “Goodbye, goodbye, goodbye,” fans theorized that her Sunday performance of “Bigger Than the Whole Sky” was an ode to Benevides. Swift did not say as much on stage, though. Swift said on her Instagram Story that she is “overwhelmed by grief.” When she tries to talk about her fan’s passing on stage, so she won’t be able to do so. “This is the last thing I ever imagined would happen when we chose to bring this tour to Brazil,” added. “I want to say I feel this loss deeply and my broken heart goes out to her family and friends.”
