Following the justice Department’s decision to drop its bribery and fraud prosecution against Indian billionaire Gautam Adani, US federal code dropped criminal charges against him.
On Monday, US district judge Nicholas Garaufis of Brooklyn granted the federal prosecutors’ plea to have the case dismissed. The judgement was taken after the court ask Adani weather any agreements had been reached in exchange for the charges being dropped. And it was requested for the explanations from the justice Department.
The Adani group has continuously denied any misconduct. The allegations were never presented against Adani in US court.
What were the accusations?
The Adani company and its affiliates were inducted by the US justice Department in 2024 on charges of participating in a $265 million bribery scam. It was about to get solar energy contracts with Indian government agencies.
The Adanis were also charged with lying about the company’s anti-corruption initiative. It was charged in an attempt to deceive American and foreign investors.

The US Securities and Exchange Commission brought civil acquisitions against Gautam and Sagar Adani. It was in addition to the justice Department’s prosecution.
The department of justice informed the court in May that it would not be persuing additional legal action against Adani and his partners prior to Monday’s ruling.
Why was the lawsuit dropped by the US justice Department?
On May 18th, The justice Department declared that the prosecution will no longer be persued.
Senior justice Department official Trent McCotter stated that the case was mainly foreign challenging to prove and at the departments present goals in a subsequently July 4 court filing.
Prosecutive stated in the document, “The department of justice has reviewed this case and has decided. In its prosecutorial discretion, not to devote further resources to these criminal charges against individual defendance.”

Rahul Gandhi asserted that there was “much more to this than meets the eye.” He said, a “compromised PM” had been compelled to “sell India’s interest” as a result.
In a post on X, Gandhi shared a media article on the US court’s decision to grant the Justice Department’s plea to drop the charges against the executives of the Adani Group. The LoP have been heard saying, “India is paying a huge price.”
