Congress has officially declared that VD Satheesan has been elected as the leader of the Congress Legislature Party (CLP). It put an end to days of tension and conjecture. The Congress chose VD Satheesan over KC Venugopal, who is known to be closed to the Lok Sabha’s leader of opposition. Twn days after the announcement of the Kerala Assembly Election Results which gave the Congress lead United democratic Front (UDF) a residing majority and the Congress huddle in between, the decision was made.
VD Satheesan describe the development as “a new era for Kerala” In response to the announcement.
Who is VD Satheesan?
Tired to the UDF’s resounding victory in the 2026 Keralam Assembly Elections, Satheesan was the leader of the opposition. In the 140 member assembly, the alliance secured 102 seats. The Congress Kerala committee will meet with governor Rajendra Vishwanath lekar today to make a claim to form the government.

VD Satheesan defeated CPI candidate ET Taison Master by a margin of 20600 votes with 78,658 votes. Since winning seat in 2001 he has served as the Paravur constituency’s representative for 25 years. VD Satheesan secured his 6th consecutive term as an MLA after winning the 2026 Kerala assembly. He has been elected 6 times from the same Paravur constituency.
K C Venugopal’s reaction on the announcement
On Thursday senior Congress leader KC Venugopal praised the party’s high command’s choice to appoint VD Satheesan as Kerala’s Chief Minister. It put an end to days of feverish conjecture on Congress’s leadership contest.
“VD Satheesan has been selected by the Congress High command as the Keralam government’s chief ministerial nominee. I am welcoming that decision whole heartedly.”
Venugopal congratulated Satheesan stating that the people of Kerala had given the UDF a big verdict. He also expressed confidence that the new administration will satisfy the people’s dreams. “Yes we fully support the Keralam government,” he declared.
