Bullets were fired on Wednesday at the Golden Temple premises in Punjab’s Amritsar, where Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) officials, including party chairman Sukhbir Singh Badal, were performing ‘seva’ in accordance with the religious sanctions issued by Sri Akal Takht Sahib. Police nabbed the man accused of attempting to shoot SAD leader Sukhbir Singh Badal.
The shooter has been identified as Narain Singh Chaura, an alleged former militant who faces numerous charges and has stayed underground. Chaura is located in the Dera Baba Nanak region. On Tuesday, he was also seen near Sukhbir Badal, dressed in a white kurta-pajama. Narain Singh Chaura was standing near to Sukhbir Singh Badal when the incident occurred. When the fire was directed at Sukhbir Badal, a’sewadar’ standing close pushed his palm upward, saving the SAD leader.
What happened in the Sukhbir Badal shooting?
Chaura is reported to be the brains behind the 2004 Burail jailbreak. Chaura assisted pro-Khalistani group Babbar Khalsa International terrorists Jagtar Singh Hawara and Paramjit Singh Bheora, as well as their two accomplices Jagtar Singh Tara and Devi Singh, in escaping from Burail jail. He switched off the jail’s electricity supply. “SAD chief Sukhbir Singh Badal sat by the Guru Ram Das Dwar as ‘Chowkidar’. A bullet was fired in his direction.I appreciate Guru Nanak for saving his ‘sevak’…This is a massive incident; what period is Punjab being pushed into? Daljit Singh Cheema is the SAD’s leader.
He slammed the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)-led Punjab administration. Saying, “I would like to ask the Chief Minister of Punjab [Bhagwant Mann], where do you want to take Punjab?”… The attacker was apprehended on the spot. I’d also like to thank the security officers here. Had they not moved quickly, there should have been a high-level judicial investigation of the situation…We will continue our’seva’…”
Who was Chaura?
Chaura was charged in about 30 instances, including one under the Explosives Act, on May 8, 2010, at the Civil Lines police station in Amritsar. He was also wanted in instances involving the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act in Amritsar, Tarn Taran, and Ropar.
Chaura was detained on February 28, 2013, in Jalalabad village, Tarn Taran, and was released on bail. According to the authorities, Chaura crossed into Pakistan in 1984 and was crucial in smuggling significant quantities of weapons and explosives into Punjab during the early stages of insurgency. While in Pakistan, he supposedly wrote a book about guerilla warfare and “seditious” literature. He was also implicated in the Burail jailbreak case.
