HP EliteBook Ultra G1q review: Coming of age for Microsoft Windows on ARM?

HP EliteBook Ultra G1q is the flagship With an Enterprise-Grade AI Image. Performance and Battery Life For a Person. The company says that the HP Dragonfly is one of the first few AI laptops in India. Running on the Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite chip.

Microsoft tailored HP Windows 11 for an ARM-based laptop to feature its first AI PC features, called Copilot. Only on Qualcomm platforms alongside a software suite from HP. But does that make it a better work machine, and at Rs 169,934, no less?

Design

TheHP EliteBook Ultra G1q in blue color (review unit) looks quite premium. It is a thin-and-light laptop sporting the regular HP design language, and here it fits well. HP The laptop features an aluminum chassis and plastic keycaps that are 50 has per cent recycled material (eg not produced from oil). The fit-and-finish is good, while the build quality of this premium laptop befits its price.

Display and audio

Featuring a 14-inch IPS LED touch display with a resolution of displays at 2.064 x by +1134 pixels, the HP EliteBook Ultra G1q VERDICT: Good color and brightness levels from the display, But you have to adjust it several times because of bad viewing angles made even worse by a slightly weak display hinge. Furthermore, the display’s glossy finish makes it reflective and more difficult to use in bright environments.

These are minor issues, however, and for everyday use, the OSD display is more than adequate. The aspect ratio supports a 16:10 display, which allows for the viewing of more vertical content in one view versus traditional 16:9 displays. It makes the phone more work-friendly as you can avoid endless scrolling. Speaking to the audio, you get a couple of bottom-firing stereo speakers on board, and they pump out some loud sound that is also pretty balanced. These are not the same users as your everyday toss-around urbanite speaker pack.

Windows 11 on ARM

The EliteBook Ultra, as mentioned above, is one of these newly-introduced first-generation Windows 11 on ARM AI -based laptops by Microsoft. This is, in effect, the Windows 11 experience that’s been customized to take advantage of ARM-based processors’ architecture while providing a better performance without affecting battery life.

App compatibility is the major division point between Windows on ARM and regular Windows; although standard Windows 11 runs a dedication-wide array of legacy apps that were designed for x86/x64 (aka 32-bit/64-bit) architecture, Windows, on the other hand, depends solely either to x86 emulation or direct running ARM apps natively in ARM62 bit architectures. For this reason, not all applications that will run on the standard version of Windows 11 can be expected to work out-of-box for ARM-based devices.

Since the productivity suite from Microsoft — Excel, Word, and Powerpoint; an assortment of Adobe Photoshop & Lightroom apps will all run perfectly fine because they are available in native ARM64 form. The same goes for browsers, which include Chrome (Edge, etc.), Firefox, Opera, etc. For example, we have programs like Adobe Acrobat and Reader, which do not come in native ARM64 form but work fine on the laptop because Windows 11 on ARM is able to emulate it.

Software and artificial intelligence features

The EliteBook Ultra, built on the Microsoft Copilot AI PC platform, boasts a host of Microsoft Studio Effects that enhance video conferencing quality; compilers so users can generate content within Paint or Photos apps with Cocreate capabilities and real-time captions from 44 languages to EMG subtitles for English texts in audio and videos.

The HP AI Companion enables users to create text-based files, and the Poly Camera Pro app improves videoconferencing. Poly Camera Pro app uses on-device AI and delivers similar functionality, and of course, both Poly Camera Pro & Microsoft Studio Effects offer the feature to change your background. Unfortunately, the app also causes battery drain by running in the background.

Performance and battery

Based on the Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite. It packs up to 16GB of soldered LPDDR5x RAM and a maximum of 1TB PCIe NVMe SSD storage. On paper, that specification may not seem particularly insistent, but the Qualcomm chip is a performance-packing powerhouse. Which generally doesn’t disappoint in terms of application responsiveness. Performance is good for day-to-day work as well as all AI-related jobs. You are likely considering buying this setup to process.

The swift performance is complemented by an impressive battery life. In practical usage, the laptop consistently manages a full day between charges and serves up. As much as fourteen hours of on-battery time in our tests. That battery life settles in for me at about ten hours when mixing workloads.  This amount should be long enough for most professionals to float a whole 8-hour day on one regular charge. So, your device constantly uses a background battery and other resources to keep Poly Cam Pro ready. If you do, though, that could mean forcing dark mode off from start-up settings to maximize your battery life.

Verdict

HP EliteBook Ultra G1q management-focused Windows laptop includes AI benefits from Microsoft and HP. The laptop excels at being a good workbook – everything from its thin-and-lightweight chassis to no-nonsense display and fast performance. I’d like my ideal workhorse-configured notebook to have a long battery life. Still, we recommend that buyers carefully look at app compatibility. As there are certain software applications that may not be ready for ARM architecture.
