Congress Backs Actor-Turned-Politician Vijay’s TVK in Tamil Nadu

The Congress party’s Tamil Nadu branch has voted a resolution to conditionally back actor-turned-politician Vijay’s TVK. TVK has become the single-largest party with 108 seats in the 234-member Assembly. This is a major move that could completely change the state’s political landscape.

Tamil Nadu’s long-standing Dravidian duopoly was definitely shattered for the first time in almost 60 years on Monday when the TVK upset the DMK and moved the AIADMK to third place.

In the Tamil Nadu assembly as well as the centre, where the Congress is allied with the MK Stalin-led Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) in the INDIA bloc, the Congress’s decision to support the TVK represents a significant change. Before the 2029 Lok Sabha elections, the opposition will need to re-evaluate its strategies. They have to fix the dynamics between the parties.

Additional minor alliances to follow

TVK is also anticipated to receive backing from other tiny parties. The list includes PMK, which has 4 seats, CPI, CPI (M), and VCK, each of which has 2 seats. With their support, TVK would be able to surpass the 118-seat majority requirement.

There have been rumours that TVK and AIADMK might also form an alliance. But given that AIADMK ran in the election alongside the BJP, it does not appear to be very realistic. Vijay has constantly opposed the BJP from time to time.

Vijay has asked the Congress for assistance in Tamil Nadu. It was stated by Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal in Delhi. He stated that the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee has been instructed by the party’s leadership to make a final decision.
