A Firecracker Factory Blast in Kattanarpatti in Tamil Nadu’s Virudhunagar district on Sunday claimed the lives of atleast 23 people. The deaths included female employees of a private firecracker manufacturing facility. A few more were injured, according to the police. “So far, we have recovered 23 bodies,” they said. About thirty employees were present at the facility when the incident happened on Sunday at around 3:30 p.m, according to a fire department officer. The explosion happened on the front veranda of the “Vanaja” fireworks business. The explosion had such a devastating effect that several buildings were totally destroyed, and at least three rooms were reduced to rubble.

The factory owner and foreman have been the subject of a complaint. They both are on the run, according to police. They said four special teams have been established to find and apprehend them.

On Monday, however, the victim’s identities were still being sought. According to district officials, 22 of the 25 deceased have been recognised thus far. Out of the victims, most of them were women. According to some stories, the blast’s ferocity burned numerous victims beyond recognition.

Rescue efforts are hindered

According to sources, Crackers continue to explode long after the first explosion. Severely disrupting rescue operations as fire and rescue services personnel battled the flames for several hours. Authorities worry that more workers may be buried beneath the rubble.

More information is anticipated as the search and rescue efforts proceed. This tragedy is the region’s deadliest industrial accident of the year. Only a few days had passed since a similar explosion that killed four people in the same district’s Vembakottai neighbourhood.

Condolences from the leaders

In the meantime, political figures from all parties expressed their condolences for the deaths. PM Narendra Modi and President Droupadi Murmu described the incident as “deeply distressing” and prayed for the injured to recover quickly. Home Minister Amit Shah and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also voiced similar sentiments.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin, on the other hand, gave the order for authorities to give the victims the help they needed. State Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu arrived in the village to oversee the relief efforts.
