In a new update related to the unfortunate demise of a first-year student at Jadavpur University, six additional individuals have been apprehended by the authorities. This incident, which occurred on August 9, involved the student tragically falling from a balcony within his hostel premises. The new arrests underscore the ongoing efforts to comprehensively investigate and understand the circumstances surrounding the incident, aiming to provide clarity and closure for the university community and the grieving family. As the legal process unfolds, it is hoped that the truth behind this unfortunate event will be revealed and justice will be duly served.
In connection with the killing of a first-year undergraduate student at Jadavpur University last week, the Kolkata Police detained six additional suspects. Nine persons have already been detained in connection with the case.
On August 9, 18-year-old Bengali (Honours) student Swapnodeep Kundu perished after allegedly falling from his hostel’s second-floor balcony. While some of the individuals detained are current students, others are alumni of the institution.
Three third-year Civil Engineering students, Md. Arif, Md. Asif Azmal, a fourth-year Electrical Engineering student. Ankan Sarkar, a third-year Civil Engineering student. Saptak Kamilya, an ex-Environmental Science student. Asit Sardar, an ex-Sanskrit Department student. And Suman Naskar were among the arrested suspects.
6 More Arrested in Jadavpur University Case
Two of the six people arrested—out of the six—had left Kolkata when the police opened an inquiry. Police from the Jadavpur police station and various squads from the homicide squad of the Kolkata Police however conducted nighttime searches in a number of West Bengal districts.
The two wanted suspects, according to a Kolkata Police official, were also apprehended in South 24 Parganas district’s Baruipur. Prior to this, Manotosh Ghosh, Deepshekhar Dutta, and Sourav Chowdhury, three current students, were detained on suspicion of being involved in the death of the first-year undergraduate student.
The student, Swapnodeep Kundu, lived in the Bagula neighbourhood of the Nadia district. Around 11:45 p.m. on August 9, he allegedly fell from the main hostel’s second-floor balcony. The next day, he supposedly passed away while receiving medical attention at a hospital.
The event occurred just after another 18-year-old student committed suicide in Kota, Rajasthan. The student committed suicide on Tuesday night. Making it the 22nd suicide instance of the year and the fourth this month.
Meanwhile, according to police sources, a meeting with Joint CP (Crime) Sankha Subhra Chakraborty is set to take place at 3 p.m. today at the Kolkata police headquarters with the Dean of Students and Registrar of Jadavpur University. In relation to alleged ragging in the institution, they will be interrogated.
High Court Appeal For Jadavpur Student’s Death
Regarding the passing of the undergraduate student at Jadavpur University, a PIL has been submitted to the Calcutta High Court.
Meanwhile, Kalyan Banerjee, a member of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), submitted the petition. It raises the issue of why CCTV cameras are not present at the majority of the institute’s locations.
