Maxwell’s form was under scrutiny after his World Cup campaign didn’t get off to a strong start when he returned from a significant injury layoff. He tried to hit a huge shot in the first delivery he played against Pakistan in Bengaluru. But he was dismissed for a first-ball duck.

Smith, a senior professional also playing, had only scored 72 runs through the first four games. He appeared to be a shell of his former self. However, he had some much-needed time in the middle against the Netherlands. He produced a solid 71 off 48 balls to keep the scoreboard moving.
Before he really let free, Maxwell was batting on 35 off 21 balls. In the following 19 balls, he scored 66 runs. He reached his century when he smashed 26 runs in five balls off Bas de Leede.
Max ODowd and Vikramjit Singh then contributed 28 runs for the first wicket. It proved to be the highest partnership for the Netherlands of AUS vs. NED. They let up their last five wickets for only six runs as Zampa kept bowling with such confidence and ran amok.
